‘Positive’ response to homes

PUBLIC consultation over partial redevelopment of a historic Wigan trading estate has been hailed a success.
More than 70 residents, plus tenants of the former wartime munitions factories at Bradley Hall in Standish, attended four exhibition sessions at the village’s Unity and Labour clubs staged by developer HIMOR this week.
Barrowcroft – plans are likely to be submitted to the council in April – would see 550 homes built on a rationalised trading estate and on land HIMOR own running parallel with Rectory Lane.
Associate director of HIMOR Sam Stafford said: “We did feel that the response to the redevelopment of the trading estate, was largely positive.
“This is reflected in the fact that of the 11 feedback forms that were filled in, eight responses were positive, commenting on the sensitive design and improvement to the area.
“The single response that was negative objected to any development in Standish.
“A common theme was highways impact, with five references to the capacity of the road network but we believe that Phase One will be neutral in highways terms, with the new residential journeys having the same impact, though at different times of the day, as the commercial journeys that would be removed from the network.
“There was concern about the impact of the wider Barrowcroft proposals on the network, and the Standish crossroads specifically, but we do think that there is scope to improve that junction.”
Mr Stafford said that a message the company had attempted to convey was that Standish cross roads will only be improved by development in the village, because the council itself had no plans to do so.
Development, said HIMOR, and the improvements to the crossroads it will enable, will result in a more efficient junction and shorter queuing terms than currently.
While the consultation invited comment on the wider Barrowcroft proposals - including the transformation of Barrowcroft Wood into a community leisure resource in particular - HIMOR is awaiting the outcome of the Core Strategy Examination recommencing early next month at Leigh Sports Village before pursuing that element.
