Prison officer bikes it for charity
Raising money for charity in a prison sounds tricky – most people attempting it might expect to be told to get on their bike.
And that is exactly what prison officer Bob Mclellan did, raising 3, 500 after completing the gruelling 62 mile Manchester-to-Blackpool bike ride, in aid of the Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
Bob, 55, is from Wigan and works at Risley Prison in Warrington. He decided there was no better place to collect a few donations than from within the prison itself.
He had contributions from colleagues, friends and the Prison Officers' Benevolent Fund, but those from the inmates were particularly special because they were made from their weekly allowances of just 5.
Bob said: "When I went round asking the lads to support the hospice I was amazed at how many contributed. Some even gave me donations of 25."
Prison Governor Bob McColm said: "There is often criticism about the prison population, but few know of the better side of their nature. We are delighted, but not surprised, at the response."
Julie Dennis from the hospice said: "A very special thanks must go to the inmates for their extremely generous support."
