Scholes, where a man allegedly turned up at a house with a gun

AN investigation is underway after a man was spotted allegedly carrying a gun.

Police officers flooded the streets of Scholes and a helicopter scanned the area from the skies after reports that a man had been spotted with a gun.

Within minutes of a 999 call, officers started a search of the man who had fled the scene by the time the authorities arrived.

It is believed that the man had turned up at the home of a woman he knew wielding a deadly weapon, but police say they cannot confirm whether or not he had a gun at this stage.

The area was searched thoroughly for the man and officers stood on guard at various points along the road including at the top of a footpath opposite The Earl of Balcarres Pub, which led into a housing estate.

The junction of Scholes and Platt Lane was also staked out as well the area around Scholes flats.

Members of the public reported that a lot of police were in the area until the early hours of Thursday morning, scouring the streets.

Local residents were left shaken up and anxiously awaited more information about the incident.

Police are still hunting the man and are investigating the claims that he was wielding a shotgun.

A Wigan police spokesman said that there was an on-going investigation into an incident and that no arrests have so far been made.

A statement said: “At 9.20pm on Wednesday February 15 police were called to a house on Scholes following reports a man was making threats.

“On arrival, officers discovered the man had fled. No one was injured and inquiries are ongoing.”

I tend to agree with the Baron. Why on earth did this need a helicopter?

I would suggest that the female had an unwanted caller whom she felt would be best dealt with by Police. Having prior of experience of shoddy police response times, she has then mentioned the 'gun' aspect to the Police operator in order to generate an immediate Police response. There was no 'man with a gun', I can assure you.

It won't be the first time a man had turned up at the home of a woman he knew wielding a 'deadly weapon'.
