Pub regulars step in to stop robbery

PUB regulars turned have-a-go heroes to help detain two robbers targeting a Wigan supermarket.

Three masked men walked into the Standish Co-op in Pole Street and demanded cash from the staff who were working shortly before evening closure.

But while the men were threatening the shop workers, another employee ran across the road to the Black Bull hotel, almost directly opposite, raising the alarm and yelling for someone to call the police.

The offenders, who were by now emptying the contents of the till and a large quantity of cigarettes into a bag, were then “disturbed” when a number of drinkers from the pub “burst in” to detain two of the suspects.

However the third offender managed to kick open the secure stock room door and made his escape via the fire door.

He is described as being black or Asian, about 5ft 9in to 5ft 10in tall, of a medium to heavy build and spoke with a Liverpudlian accent, wearing a black balaclava and carrying a bin bag. DI Inspector Martin Reddington said: “The pub customers showed incredible bravery to confront these robbers.”
