Pupils release balloons for Haiti

Wigan pupils have launched their own fund raising drive to help ease the suffering in Haiti.

Teenagers at Up Holland High School have donated 1 for each helium filled balloon released in a race this week.

They were anxious to show their support for people in the shattered Caribbean country and came up with the idea of using balloons – with the messages attached – as a symbol of hope.

All messages encourage the finder too donate to the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

Sponsored by the Co-op Bank, the balloons were released after a minute's silence.

Headteacher Kathryn Barton said: "Pupils were shocked by pictures from Haiti and wanted to raise money.

"All the pupils and staff witnessed the release of the balloons after a minute's silence during which time we remembered those who have died in the tragedy.

"Events such as this help us to remember that we are members of a global community and must at all times act as responsible, caring members of that community."
