Quit smoking campaign launched
A huge campaign is being launched across Wigan this week to help thousands more smokers kick the habit.
Smokefree Greater Manchester is starting a tele-marketing campaign which will target people in the "hard to reach" areas of the region.
These are traditionally deprived parts of Greater Manchester where smoking rates are estimated to be up to 50% higher when compared to other areas of the conurbation. And despite record numbers already quitting locally, that includes Wigan.
Similar schemes in other parts of the North West have resulted in more than 4,000 people being contacted. Of these, 62% requested more information, 43% requested follow up calls and six per cent asked to be put straight through to the Smoking Cessation Service.
Will Blandamer, Director for Health Improvement, said: "The aim of this latest campaign is to ensure everyone across the region, including those people who may not generally read newspapers or listen to the radio, are aware of the help which is available to them to help them to quit smoking.
"This is not intended to be forceful in any way or put anyone under pressure. We just want to provide help and advice to those who may want it."
SmokeFree Greater Manchester is working in conjunction with a specialist tele-marketing agency on this latest initiative. For free help and support, contact 0800 432 0303.
