Rape drug mum saved by Superman

A mum wants to track down a real-life Superman who rescued her after she was poleaxed by a date-rape drug.

The mysterious stranger, dressed as the film and cartoon superhero, came to Elizabeth Caulwell's aid and wrapped her in his fancy dress cape, when she collapsed on a night out in Wigan town centre.

She had only had a couple of drinks in a King Street bar on Boxing Day when she crashed unconscious to the floor and lay paralysed for hours in Wigan Infirmary.

Doctors say it was likely the mother-of-one had had her drink spiked with a substance like Rohypnol or Gamma-hydroxy-butyrate, which has been used by rapists to dope victims, and has occasionally been fatal.

Elizabeth, 26, of Chorley Road, Standish, decided not to report the matter to the police because she did not think there was a chance of a conviction, and she wanted to protect the reputation of the bar, whose staff she does not blame.

Elizabeth, who lives some of the time in the United Arab Emirates because of husband Paul Davies's job, said: "I am not a heavy drinker – you can't be in Abu Dhabi – and I had only had three drinks when I collapsed.

"I remember the conversation I was having with my sister Sarah and friends moments before and then it was as if a light was switched off. It's good we decided to move away from some stairs, because Sarah said I went down like a tree.

"It is a complete blank until I woke up hours later in hospital.

"Apparently 'Superman,' of all people, helped me on to a couch and the DJ tried to give me water. I was not coming round so Superman swept me up in his arms and carried me out of the bar.

"Sarah rang for my dad. An ambulance was called and the man dressed as Superman wrapped his cape round me. It would be nice if I could find out who he was so I could thank him and give him his cape back."

Elizabeth's blood-alcohol levels were that of twice the drink-driving limit.

There was no sign of any drugs in her system. Doctors say date-rape substances very quickly leave no trace.

She collapsed so suddenly she did not even break her fall with her hands. Landing face down she cracked one tooth, chipped another, burst her lip and suffered a whiplash injury.

Elizabeth added: "We think my drink must have been spiked. I want other women to be aware this can happen."

Anyone who knows the identity of Superman is asked to ring Wigan editorial on 01942 506271.
