WIGAN hospital chiefs say patient care remains there top priority and they have welcomed the findings of a public inquiry into failings at Stafford Hospital.

Wrightington Wigan Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) who run all three hospital sites in Wigan, say they have taken on board findings following an investigation which found that years of abuse and neglect at Stafford Hospital led to the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of patients.

Andrew Foster, chief executive, said: “We expanded our work to improve quality and pursue service excellence following the first Francis Report in 2010.

“Our strategy remains focused on quality and to deliver safe, effective and caring services for all our patients. Patient safety remains our highest priority of all.

“We will never be complacent about patient safety or quality and we will review the Francis Report in detail to identify areas where we could benefit from making change as the result of any recommendations that emerge.”

Inquiry chairman, Robert Francis QC, said the failings at Stafford went right to the top of the health service.

He made 290 recommendations, saying “fundamental change” was needed to prevent the public losing confidence.
