Robbers target OAP at dance school reception

The Rose Club, Atherton Road, Hindley - scene of a robbery

DETECTIVES have launched a manhunt after a ballroom dancing school was robbed.

The man, struck at the Hurst Dance Studios in Hindley on Wednesday evening and made off with hundreds of pounds.

Police today launched an appeal for information about the terrifying raid.

Instructor Philip Hurst was taking a class in the function room at The Rose Club (formerly The Monaco Ballroom), when the men burst into the front entrance before confronting Mr Hurst’s elderly mother who collects payments from members.

They threatened her, before making off with the night’s takings. No-one was injured in the incident.

Mr Hurst would only say: “Two young lads ran in and grabbed the cash tin . It was only a minor incident and nobody was hurt in any way.”

A spokesman for The Rose Club said that this was the first such incident that they had suffered since taking over the running of the former Monaco Ballroom from the council.

She said: “We have never had anything like this happen since we have been in charge of The Rose Club and Mr Hurst tells us it has never happened to him before either.

“It is thankfully a very, very isolated incident.

“Phil has been dealing with the police so we don’t have any identification information about the men who took the money.

“We will look into what has happened and see if any procedures need improving on because obviously there is always room for improvement.”

A source said: “The man gave this lady a bad time and she must have been terrified.

“It would be a scary thing for a young person, never mind a pensioner but these people have no morals at all, do they?”

No description of the offender or any suspects have so far been given.

But a spokesman for Wigan CID said: “At around 8.30pm on Wednesday February 15, police were called to Atherton Road, Hindley, following reports a man had stolen money from the property.

“On arrival, officers discovered that a man had taken a cash box from an elderly woman and escaped on a bike.

“Inquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.”

Post19: Maybe you should call yourself 'claptrap' because that's all you ever seem to speak.

I seem to recall that as late as the 1980's that they used to be able to birch gay people on the IOM. Says it all about the ridiculous, backward place and it's 'example' doesn't it?

To all those who want to bring the birch back, can we have specific examples of what it would be applied to? How and where it would be administered. How much time would be spent getting it through parliament. How often it was used on the Isle of Man in the ten years prior to it being stopped. There are many more questions but | won't overtax you all for now. Just bear in mind the only people who will really benefit are lawyers. Now there a group of individuals who it is suitable for along with MP's .

What a presposterous comment! So really, you are saying that the 'evidence' of such an increase in crime is based on Manx gossip and your own opinions?

Can anyone provide a link or hard evidence regarding these statistics? Without these, your statements are right up there with the likes of 'You can't put up Christmas decorations because it might offend XY and Z' or 'You can't wear a poppy at X place of work because it might offend Y'. All without basis and substance!

Not all people on the Isle of Man are affluent and Train Diver is right in what he has said about the rise in crime on the island since the use of the birch was ended. Even had to build a new prison as a result of the increase in crime.

Well, seeing as we're going to be a Muslim country before too long anyway, let's try a few of their remedies for punishing criminals and preventing re-offending. Chopping hands off, 20 lashes across the bare back in public, a few beheadings. That should stop 'em!

Yes, but this is a civilised country - not some poorly developed backwater. What I am trying to point out is that talking such cobblers won't solve anything as this kind of thing is NOT coming back and frankly such comments are becoming rather tedious in my opinion.
