Salads boss to climb Kilimanjaro

A Wigan salad boss aims to stay as cool as a cucumber as he bids to scale one of the world's highest mountains.

Simon Ball, managing director of salad company Hazeldene, based at Martland Park Industrial Estate, is taking on Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of educational charity, The Outward Bound Trust.

Mr Ball is hoping to raise 10,000 for the charity, when he takes on Africa's highest peak next month.

He said: "Climbing Kilimanjaro is a huge challenge, and I will be tested both physically and mentally.

"However, I will be spurred on by the fact that all the money I raise will go to a charity that helps a huge number of young people to find confidence and unlock their potential through learning in the outdoors."

As well as conquering Kili', Mr Ball is planning to lend his support to a community project in Moshi, Tanzania, volunteering to help build schools, watering holes and set up medical facilities.

Mr Ball added: "I am really looking forward to getting out there, facing my own personal challenge, and helping people in Tanzania to overcome their daily challenges.

"And, to be raising money for a charity that does such fantastic work, right here in the UK, in the process is great."

The Outward Bound Trust was established more than 65 years ago to boost personal learning and development through a programme of challenging activities in the outdoors.

In 2009, more than 25,000 young people benefited from an Outward Bound experience.

The money raised by Mr Ball will be enough to send some 60 financially disadvantaged young people on an Outward Bound course at one of the Trust's five UK centres.
