Santa dash raises cash

Two Wigan women who made a mad dash round Old Trafford have raised thousands of pounds for charity.

Jane Norcross, 23, from Ashton, and her pal Lucy Conway, 23, from Bryn, were among hundreds of runners taking part in a Santa Dash.

Participants dressed in red Santa outfits and ran three miles, raising money for different charities.

Jane said: "We did two laps around the stadium and one lap inside. I loved every minute of it – I would do it again.

"The atmosphere was really amazing. It was nice knowing we all had a common aim, running to help a charity."

Jane raised more than 200 for The Christie Hospital, where she was treated when she was diagnosed with non Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, in October 2006 at the age of 19.

She added: "When I was told I had cancer, it was all a bit of a blur and I didn't really understand. My mum and dad were more upset than me. It was tough going at times, but I absolutely loved it at The Christie. The staff were amazing and I made lots of friends.

"I have been in remission almost three years. I have my next appointment in January, so fingers crossed everything is alright."

Since her treatment, Jane and her family have been raising money for the hospital. She added: "So far, through fun runs and bucket collections we've raised around 4,000.

"It's my way of saying thank you for the care I received and also in memory of my friend Danielle.

"I met her while I was at The Christie as she was also having treatment, but she sadly died last year.

"The Christie saved my life."

The Christie charity is one of Manchester United's chosen charity partners until 2010.

Since this partnership was launched in 2007, more than 150,000 has been raised to fund a full-time physiotherapist, a full-time occupational therapist and associated equipment for the teenage cancer unit at The Christie.
