Speeding fines treble

Nearly 1,200 speeding fines were issued by fixed cameras in Wigan last year – almost THREE times as many as in 2007.

Figures obtained by the Wigan Evening Post under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that 1,183 drivers were hit with fixed penalty notices for triggering one of the borough's 15 static speed cameras in 2008.

In a three-year period from 2006 to 2008 inclusive, more than 11,000 speeding motorists were issued with fines by both static and mobile speed cameras set up across Wigan, generating an astonishing 647,460.

The cash is ploughed back in to casualty reduction initiatives.

Of those penalised last year, 1,035 have paid their fines, generating 62,100.

In contrast, just 433 fines were issued by the borough's fixed speed cameras in the previous year, of which 392 were paid and raising 23,520 – almost two-thirds less than in 2008.

During 2006, 712 drivers were hit with fines, 666 of them stumping up the cash to generate 39,960.

Thousands of motorists have also been hit with fines after being caught speeding by the four mobile camera units that are in use in Wigan.

Three-years-ago 4,115 fines were issued to motorists caught speeding past one of the approved mobile speed enforcement sites.

That figure fell by almost half in 2007, to 2,542, a figure matched almost exactly last year when 2,537 fines were issued to speeding motorists.

The amount of cash generated in that three year period amounts to more than half-a-million pounds.

In 2006 drivers paid 239, 700 in fines. The following year that figure dropped to 145,620, while last year 136,560 was generated by fines issued from the mobile speed enforcement units.

There are currently 23 approved mobile speed enforcement sites in Wigan Borough.

Although there are fifteen yellow box static camera sites in Wigan, not all are in operation at any one time as the county's speed cameras are shared between all eight boroughs.

There are thought to be 33 cameras available across the county to fill around 150 yellow boxes.
