Stationery store to close
Staples is closing down
Wigan is to lose its biggest stationery and computer store.
Staples, on Wallgate, will put up the shutters at the end of January and is one of a number of outlets to cease trading in the recession-hit town over recent years.
Last year, Staples closed 45 stores in Europe and accelerated closing 15 stores in America as part of a plan to save £250m.
The Chief Executive Officer, Ronald Sargeant said: “The decline has come about as workers shifted to fewer traditional production.
“In fact our business has been under pressure since the start of the recession.”
Customer Martin Mayall of Aspull said: “I’ll miss Staples because it has the finest array of material for businesses.
“I’ve traded with them since they opened.
“I suppose this is all a sign of the times.”
One customer who didn’t want to be named said: “It’s a pity we are losing Staples.
“It’s the best place in Wigan for everything from a paper clip to an advanced computer.
“I’ve noticed that the store has not been as busy in recent times.
“I suppose it’s another example of a business being lost due to this deep recession.”
Staples is the largest office product company in the world, and has stores in 27 countries, throughout north and south America, Asia and Australia. Its headquarters are in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 2011, sales overall fell by 18 per cent.
