Stray puppy's ear sliced off
A mutilated puppy was found wandering the streets with part of its ear sliced off - the six-month old Staffordshire bull terrier was taken to the vet by a member of the public where it is receiving treatment for the injury.
The puppy, which is male and a red-colour, was wearing a muzzle when it was found wandering on St Steven's Field, off Astley Street in Tyldesley.
Vet James Elliott, who has been treating the pup at Tyldesley Veterinary Centre, said: "A man brought the dog into reception and said he had found it about 30 minutes earlier.
"The slice across the ear is very clean and it seems highly unlikely that the dog could have done this accidentally – it looks very suspicious from that point of view.
"The wound was bleeding heavily when he arrived and we just bandaged it – we are still not sure whether we will have to cauterise it or whether it will need to be stitched.
"The puppy has got a very nice temperament and it's a really friendly dog. It seems to have been really well handled.
"At first we did consider that someone might have tried to crop the ears for cosmetic reasons, but now we believe it is almost certainly just an evil act of cruelty."
Despite the injury, the dog is in excellent physical condition.
Chief inspector Cathy Hyde said: "The vets believe the injury has been caused deliberately, which is why they called us.
"It's a clear cut, which was fresh at the time it was found, and, obviously, the fact that the puppy was wearing a muzzle suggests it could have been restrained.
"We want to hear from anyone who knows who the puppy belongs to, or what might have happened to it."
