THE SCREAMS of a terrified Wigan teenager scared off a sneak thief during a night-time break-in.

Police are now hunting for the offender, who gained entry to the property on Ash Grove, Golborne, through a bedroom window.

The burglar, described as being white, tall and of skinny build, ran off when the 13-year-old girl woke up and raised the alarm, causing him to escape out of the window.

A packet of cigarettes was taken as the man walked through from the bedroom where he gained entry, across the landing into the girl’s bedroom. The girl was not hurt during the incident.

Pc Sophie Roberts of Leigh Police, said: “The teenager is understandably still shaken by this incident and was terrified that this man was standing in her own home.

“Fortunately, she was not hurt and when she screamed, the offender ran off.

“We believe this man was an opportunist who was testing the windows and doors to see if they were open.

“I would remind residents that all doors and windows should be locked, even if someone is in the house.”

Anyone with information about the incident, that occurred at 3am on 11 February, is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 7371 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
