Thief pushed woman over
A drug addict pushed over a woman while fleeing from a supermarket with a stolen handbag, a court heard.
Susan Callaghan and her husband spotted Mark Livesley rushing out of the Sainsbury's store in Marus Bridge with a handbag stolen from a trolley.
They tried to restrain him and Mrs Callaghan was pushed over, but Livesley was detained until the police arrived, said Robert Akers, prosecuting.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that at the time of the incident, on July 28, Livesley was on probation for two similar offences.
The 34-year-old of Inglewhite, Skelmersdale, pleaded guilty to theft and assault.
The judge, Recorder William Smith, told him that stealing to repay his drug debts was no excuse.
After hearing that he had been responding to treatment and his partner is expecting their first child in November, the judge sentenced him to five months' imprisonment suspended for two years, plus attendance on a 12-month drugs rehabilitation programme.
