Thrown out for attacks
MORE than 40 Wigan primary school pupils have been excluded for attacking teachers in the last 12 months, shock figures reveal today.
During the previous academic year, no fewer than 112 children aged 11 or under were suspended in the borough, including 42 for physically assaulting adults and another 43 for verbally abusing them.
A further 52 children were excluded for assaulting fellow pupils and six more for threatening a schoolmate. Two children were temporarily barred for racist abuse and another two for damaging school property.
Sadly, this is nothing new. During the previous year, one youngster was excluded for sexual misconduct and another suspended for a drug and alcohol-related problem.
The overall number of primary school suspensions in 2009-2010 is actually down on the previous year’s figures although the number of assaults against adults rose by five.
Meanwhile, 962 secondary school students were temporarily suspended last year, with a further eight high school youths permanently excluded.
