Tot murder enquiries continue

Rio Smedley

Rio Smedley

A MAN arrested on suspicion of the murder of a two-year-old boy is thought to be from Wigan.

Tragic tot Rio Smedley, from Bolton, was rushed to hospital on Sunday after he was reported to have gone into cardiac arrest, but despite ambulance crews trying to revive him on the way to The Royal Bolton Hospital, he died a short time later.

A post mortem has since revealed that he died as a result of severe abdominal injuries.

The partner of the tot’s mum, Kirsty Smedley, was arrested shortly after the incident and has been held in police custody for questioning since Monday.

Police have just secured another extension to allow them to continue questioning the 22-year-old, which will run until the early hours of tomorrow morning when they will either have to charge the man, release him or apply for a further extension.

At this stage it is not known exactly what area of Wigan he is from but Ms Smedley’s neighbours say the couple only moved into the house, on Cheriton Drive, Bolton, eight weeks ago.

Early reports of the boy’s tragic death suggested that the man, who is not Rio’s father, had told detectives that the tot’s horrific injuries were a result of a fall, but that was ruled out by initial enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5740 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
