Triple death shock at care home
Acorns Care Home, Hindley
POLICE were called to a Wigan care home after three elderly residents died within 45 minutes of each other.
Medical staff felt it necessary to inform officers because of the closeness together of the spate of deaths at the Acorns Centre in Hindley.
But it soon became apparent that it was just a tragic coincidence that three seriously ill pensioners should all pass away from natural causes on the same evening.
The alarm was raised last Friday at the care centre in Parkside and police arrived shortly after 9pm.
In the previous hour two women aged 90 and 82 and an 87-year-old man had all died, one with family around them and another having just been visited by relatives.
A spokesman for the police said it was soon established that there were no suspicious circumstances and that all three had been receiving “pathway care,” which means that nothing more can be done for a patient in medical terms and death is not far away.
And care home owner Kevin Hall said: “There is nothing really to explain. We have had three people who were being seen by a doctor, they were close to death and it happened to be that they passed away on the same evening.
“Admittedly it is unusual for three deaths so soon after each other. Having said that we have 39 elderly residents, the majority of whom have nursing needs and quite often when we get people home from hospital, they come to us to spend their remaining days here.”
Mr Hall added that none of the late residents had been suffering from any winter bug infections that have been afflicting parts of the Wigan population of late and led to the closure of infirmary wards.
Police are appealing for the public’s help in tracing the next of kin of another of the Acorns Care Home residents who died earlier this year.
Winnifred Senior, 74, passed away on January 12.
Again there are no suspicious circumstances but the authorities have been struggling to find any surviving relatives.
