Want to carry the Torch?

WIGAN’S MP has launched a search for inspirational people from Wigan to carry the Olympic Flame and have their ‘Moment to Shine’

With less than one year to go until the Olympic Flame arrives in the UK, Lisa Nandy MP met Olympian Jonathan Edwards and London 2012 Organising Committee Torch Relays Producer, Deborah Hale, to discuss the Olympic Torch Relay route and to launch the search for inspirational people from Wigan to carry the Olympic Flame.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) recently confirmed the Olympic Flame will be carried across the UK by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers for 70 days, with 90 per cent of the places made available to the public.

The LOCOG ‘Moment to Shine’ public nomination campaign, which runs until 29 June, is the first opportunity to get involved and aims to find 2,012 inspirational members of the public who have gone beyond their personal best.

Several stops on the route have now been announced but Lisa has been calling for Wigan to be included in the next stage of announcements.

Lisa Nandy MP said: “We look forward to welcoming the Olympic Torch Relay to the North West and celebrating the London 2012 Games. There are many inspirational stories to tell about people from across Wigan that make a difference every day in our community.”

Why has an MP got involved with this? She should be doing something more important like representing the people of Wigan finding jobs and encouraging investment from business outside of Wigan. I wounder how many extra votes she aims to get by this? We have a Wigan Sports Council that should be promoting these games not a Laour MP....

No way would they have me! It would have to be someone from an ethnic minority, like a Disabled, Gay, Asian, Single Parent, with a Drugs Problem, who's a member of the Labour Party.
