Water to be shut off in pipe renewal

Water engineers will work through the night for the latest phase of the huge Standish mains renewal.

United Utilities (UU) was due to be working tonight on School Lane to minimise disruption to water supplies for residents.

The work will be done between 11pm and 6am on Thursday morning.

School Lane residents may notice the noise of a generator which will be needed to provide light and power for the workers.

Daytime work on School Lane should be finished by the end of this week. Work will then move back to High Street from Chadwick's Butchers towards the Globe pub.

From July 17 work will then move to Green Lane, Standish, but this has been scheduled to take place during the school holidays to minimise disruption as the road will need to be closed for several weeks.

Water mains renewal work is then moving to the Pemberton area from July 20.

A meeting scheduled to be held at Orrell Holgate Primary School in Moor Road on Wednesday July 8, starting at 7pm, will discuss the work. UU representatives will be there to explain this next stage of the gauge programme which is replacing Victorian cast iron pipes with new plastic mains.

United Utilities engineer Brian McBurney said: "We will need to shut off the water to the whole of Standish while we connect our new water mains.

"We don't want to inconvenience people by doing this work during the day so we have arranged to make the connection while most people are asleep."
