What now for Pemps?

The former Pemps club on Dorning Street

A LEGENDARY nightclub is back in Wigan hands.

Pemps shut its doors seven years ago and hasn’t re-opened since.

Known for many things, most notably its controversial owner Barbara Calderbank and her strict entry code, the club was loved by both Wiganers and those from out of town.

Since shutting, its doors have remained closed but last week, local bar owner Tony Callaghan acquired it.

Unfortunately, the place is in a state of disrepair and will not be re-opening its doors and Tony doesn’t think he could ever match what Barbara did with the place.

He said: “It was an institution when Barbara had it.

“For me to follow in her footsteps is impossible. She had a fantastic business.

“The building is totally unsafe too so I’ve got to look at it and make a decision what to do next.”

The property comprises two buildings and a yard area while the site extends to approximately 0.13 acres.

The single storey rendered building has a gross external floor area of approximately 200sq m and the two storey building an estimated gross external floor area of 213sq m.

The club was voted in the top 10 top nightclubs of all time in Loaded magazine back in 1998.

Among its other distinguished features were warm cans of beer and its atmosphere inside.

The Dorning Street venue closed for “a full re-furbishment” but never opened again.

Sadly, Barbara passed away in 2007 and tributes flooded in for the “Queen of Wigan nightlife.”

So, what next for the old venue?

Tony added: “I’m not sure yet, we have a couple of things in mind.

“I may very well build the biggest beer garden in Wigan at the back of Indiepencence. I just can’t follow what Barbara did with Pemps.

“It would just be an insult to try and re-open her old business.”
