AFTER three years of campaigning, work has finally started on rebuilding a wheelchair-friendly footpath in Wigan.

Independent councillors Bob Brierley and Frank Carmichael have secured funding from the Township Forum and Wigan Council to rebuild and Tarmac the footpath at Westlake, off Swan Lane, in Hindley Green.

The path, which is used by visitors to the Westlake area and also by residents, will be completed in the next three weeks.

Coun Brierley said: “We have been campaigning for the last three years, but funding was not always available and we were quoted extortionate prices.

“But we managed to get some funding and after four quotations we went for the best value.

“We will build a 1.2 metre wide footpath with location points where people can pass wheelchairs.

“We will also put benches down.

“The residents were facing muddy conditions and it was just a disgrace.

“Residents are entitled to be able to safely walk around a fantastic facility, as it is the nicest place in Hindley Green and we are making sure it stays that way.”

Coun Carmichael said: “I am delighted that something is being done, as residents have been crying out for it for a long time.

“This has been a really nice community project that has involved myself, Coun Brierley and Hindley Green Residents’ Association.”

Nearby residents are delighted that they will soon have a sturdy footpath, with wheelchair access.

Ivy Dickens, of Hindley Green Residents’ Association, said: “The footpath has been in a very bad state for a long time and it was not wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. But now it will be able to allow wheelchairs to go along the path, which is brilliant.”

Well Done, HGRA and Cllrs Brierley and Carmichael. The community would benefit from more involvement of this kind of work. If more residents would get involved instead of only complaining, our village would be a better place.

So not an excuse for the shameless self-publicist Bob Brierley to get his mush in the paper again at all. Have you bought the gritter that you promised your ward residents you would be getting yet Bob?

I bet that footpath suffers really bad congestion with all them wheelchairs using it. .... Those 'location points' where people can pass wheelchairs are much needed. It's very frustrating to be out for a walk and to get stuck behind a wheelchair hogging the middle lane so that nobody can get past.. ...... Sad, Sad and triple Sad.
