A WIGAN teenager was held by police after a CS canister was discharged at a troubled secondary school - injuring 10 pupils and three teachers.

Police arrested a 14-year-old boy from Billinge after the weapon was sprayed at Rainford High Technology College on Thursday afternoon - hospitalising two children.

A 15-year-old boy from Huyton was also taken to a police station to be interviewed, also on suspicion of possession of a firearm and assault.

Police and emergency crews were called to the Higher Lane school after the weapon was discharged on the school’s grounds at about 2.40pm.

In total, 10 pupils and three teachers had to be treated by paramedics. Two of the children were taken to hospital “as a precaution” while the other casualties were all treated at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police confirmed: “Officers were called at around 2.40pm following reports that a CS canister had been discharged.

“Three teachers and eight students were treated by paramedics who attended the scene and two students were taken to hospital as a precaution and have since been released.”

A spokeswoman for St Helens Council simply said that the incident was “dealt with quickly” and that the matter was now in the hands of the police.

Education chiefs confirmed last month that Rainford High’s principal and vice-principal had both resigned, following a period of suspension.

The chair of governors also resigned shortly before Easter, citing “personal and health reasons”.

Since February, “super-head” Liz Nicholls has taken on the role of acting principal and, just this week, the school announced that Ian Young would take over as principal in September.
