Wigan’s crimes revealed

VOYEURISM, theft and even assaults are just some of the crimes being committed in the borough’s leisure centres.

Figures obtained through Freedom of Information laws revealed that there were 54 offences reported in Wigan borough between October 2010 and March 2012. A breakdown of the statistics, released this week, shows that Robin Park Indoor Sports Centre and Robin Park Arena had the most crimes reported with 22 in total.

Incidents at the arena included cars being broken into, vandalism to vending machines, bicycles being stolen and assault.

Incidents at the indoor sports centre included assault, vehicle theft, bags being stolen and verbal and physical abuse to staff members.

Wigan Life Centre, which only opened last year, had only five offences reported, although one of them was for inappropriate filming using a mobile phone.

The others were all for items stolen from lockers.

Ashton Leisure Centre saw windows smashed by youths and damage caused to the roof, while in Leigh at the Indoor Sports Centre, thefts and verbal abuse to staff were just some of the offences reported.

Only Hindley Leisure Centre saw no incidents reported.

A spokesman for WLCT said: “Like any organisation our buildings and facilities can, on the rare occasion, be subjected to criminal activity.

“We work closely with the police to minimise this and urge anyone who spots anti-social behaviour or criminal activity taking place to contact the police.”
