Wigan shirts under Saints’ stadium?

ARE there two Wigan shirts buried underneath the pitch at St Helens’ new stadium?

That’s the nightmare scenario facing Saints fans after rumours circulated that a pair of Warriors-mad builders working on the new Langtree Park stadium have secretly slipped a couple of the shirts of Saints’ fiercest rivals beneath the turf on the centre spot.

The rumour mill began churning after 12-year-old Wigan fan Shaun Arnold informed several Warriors players on Twitter of the concealed shirts, having been alerted to it by his mum Karen.

Karen, who is also a Wigan season ticket holder but lives in St Helens, initially dismissed the story as too fanciful, but says she is no longer convinced the hidden shirts are merely an urban myth.

Karen, 49, said: “I’ve heard two people at my work now repeating the same story, and they’ve both been told it separately. One of them is a Saints fan and the other one is a relative of one of the construction workers who is supposed to have done it.

“It’s only word of mouth and I don’t really know, but I believe it’s true, because the people who have been mentioning it at work aren’t given to putting wild rumours about.

“I told Shaun about it because he follows some of the players on Twitter, so I told him to put it up there and see if anything happens.

“If it is true, though, how mad is that going to be?”

Karen and Shaun have now started a Twitter campaign to try and get some of the Wigan players to kiss the patch of grass where the shirts are meant to be, when Wigan visit the stadium for the big Good Friday derby, which would certainly generate some comment if it happened live on Sky Sports.

Karen said: “It would be great to try and get all the players to kiss the pitch as they ran out. We also thought it would be great if we could get the Wigan fans in the visiting end to chant for them to kiss the pitch as well.”

Stewart Whitfield, administrator of independent Saints fan website RedVee.net, said: “I know there were a few ‘Pie Eaters’ who worked on the site, but it’s not the first time such a thing has been suggested about a new build and it sounds like an urban myth to me.

“I’m sure the story is one most Saints fans would appreciate, though. We like nothing better than to see Wigan get buried on our midden!”
