Wiganers pay tribute to fallen heroes

Wiganers paid tribute to the brave servicemen and women at Remembrance Sunday events.

Parades and services took place across the Wigan borough with hundreds of people paying their respects.

Wigan Mayor, Coun Mark Aldred said: "Only recently I was privileged to attend the opening of the borough's veterans' council building in Platt Bridge and meet some of the servicemen and women involved.

"They are fine bunch of people and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

"Remembrance Sunday has taken on a new poignancy with the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan."

His words were made all the more poignant as the Ministry of Defence announced another British soldier had been killed in Afghanistan.

The serviceman from 4th Battalion, The Rifles, died in a blast near Sangin, in central Helmand Province.

Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "It is my sad duty to inform you that earlier today, the morning of Remembrance Sunday, a soldier from 3 Rifles Battle Group was killed as a result of an explosion near Sangin, in Helmand Province. One of our fellow soldiers, one of us, who we remembered this morning and who will not be forgotten."
