Windfall to boost bored youngsters
Bored youngsters in Wigan can look forward to some new attractions following a £2.9m windfall.
The cash is part of a 420m countrywide package to give youngsters more to do.
The money will pay for projects such as skate parks, basketball courts, and music workshops in disadvantaged areas where young people are at risk of getting into trouble.
It forms part of a wider 679m package for young people's services, announced earlier this year as part of the Government's 10-year youth strategy.
In Wigan the money will be split between the Youth Opportunity Fund, Youth Capital Fund and the Positive Actions for Young People programme over the next three years.
Making the announcement, Children's Minister Beverley Hughes called for local authorities to consult with young people so they can provide activities that young people want, at times that suit them, but especially at flashpoint times, when boredom can lead young people into trouble.
She added that she wanted everyone working with young people to be aware of the bigger picture of what young people need.
Wigan's had its own youth panel to deciding how YOF and YCF money was spent for the last two years.
Cabinet member for young people Brian Wilson said: "This is very welcome news.
"We are aware of the deficiencies across the borough in our provision for young people's leisure.
"These funding streams will give us the opportunity to offer young people some positive pursuits."
