A LOCAL MP has slammed pension reforms which could see more than 2,000 Wigan women lose out.

Makerfield MP Yvonne Fovargue said planned changes mean women born in 1952 and 1953 who retire in 2015 aged 63 will draw the basic weekly pension of £107.45. However, men born in the same year will retire later, making them eligible for the new single-tier state pension being introduced in 2017.

Citing research by the House of Commons Library, Ms Fovargue estimates women will be around £1,900 worse off each year than men of the same age.

The amount of money women will receive will depend on the contributions they have made and if they receive means-tested benefits or not.

Ms Fovargue said: “Ministers have been caught red-handed hiding the truth on pension reforms.

“This government’s pension changes have hit hard-working women in our borough time and again and these reforms are no different.

“It’s about time the government was honest about who will lose out.”
