Yvonne's pride at MP selection
Yvonne Fovargue is Makerfield Labour Party's choice to fight the general election.
The Warrington councillor and chairman of St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau had been a long term favourite.
And she stormed through the hustings with a "considerable majority" among the 160 members – approaching three quarters of the branch – who packed into Stubshaw Labour Club at the weekend.
East Yorkshire town councillor Emma Hoddinott, whose campaign was mired in a row over her election address claims to have been a former Mayor, was runner- up.
Her selection comes days after Wigan Labour Party chose 30-year-old Lisa Nandy to represent them following the resignation of Neil Turner – that too was an all-women shortlist.
Wife of Makerfield Labour constituency organiser Paul Kenny, Ms Fovargue is mother of a grown up daughter, an active member of union Unite and the Co-operative Party.
She described her selection as a "huge honour and privilege." But admitted: "Now the hard work really starts!
"I'm seeking to follow in Ian McCartney's footsteps and there is a sense of trepidation because Makerfield has a proud tradition of support and loyalty to the Labour and trade union movement with continuous Labour representation from the election of Stephen Walsh in 1906 to Ian's election in 1987."
