ARSONISTS are being hunted after a blaze at a home.

Police today appealed for information about the fire in the early hours of Friday morning.

At around 1am a neighbour witnessed somebody setting a garden shed alight before fleeing the scene in Diamond Street in Leigh.

Emergency services attended and put out the blaze before it spread to the neighbouring house.

It is the latest in a series of blazes tackled in recent weeks which may have been caused by deliberate ignition. Sgt Justine Topping said: “We are aware of a deliberate fire that occurred at an address on Diamond Street.

“Thankfully no one was seriously injured, however anyone prepared to deliberately start any fire is potentially putting the lives of innocent members of public at risk.

“We are investigating this and I would ask anyone information about this or any other incident to call us.”

Another incident occurred within the same area just weeks ago when a bin was deliberately set alight. And last week residents were evacuated after a blaze at Housley Close, Worsley Mesnes, at about 9.20pm on Monday. Arson has not been ruled out.

Emergency crews had earlier attended and found a communal area ablaze which they were quickly able to deal with.

The scene remains subject to a joint investigation by Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

This comes after it was announced Pagefield Mill and Mesnes Park are now part of a dispersal order area after a spate of violent incidents including a fire being lit inside the building.

If troublemakers remain or return to this area having been told to leave, they could face up to three months imprisonment and/or a fine up to £2,500.
