POLICE do not believe there was any “third party involvement” following the discovery of a body in a burnt-out car.

A force spokeswoman confirmed yesterday that the badly burnt body was believed to be that of a man, but that formal identification was yet to take place.

Officers discovered the body shortly before 9am on Wednesday after a dog walker found a torched Ford Focus down a remote farm track behind Up Holland High School.

Detectives initially kept an open mind as to the circumstances of the incident and forensic teams remained at the site - off Sandbrook Road in Orrell - throughout the day.

An evidence tent and a private ambulance were spotted at the scene on Wednesday evening.

Police are still keen to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. They would also like to hear from anyone who has any information about the car or how it came to be where it was.

The car is an old-style two-door Ford Focus with five spoke alloy wheels and a larger than usual exhaust.

As things stand, the mystery death is still being treated as “unexplained”.

Witnesses can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
