STANDISH was brought to a standstill following a bomb scare.
Residents were evacuated form their homes when police were alerted to a suspicious package near the recycling units behind the Co-op store on Preston Road at around 10.15am on Saturday morning,
Army bomb disposal experts were called in and the centre of Standish was off limits to the public for several hours.
However, after a full inspection, bomb experts deemed the suspicious package safe and residents were let back into their homes at around 4pm.
Wigan Chief Inspector Stuart Wrudd, said: “This incident has caused disruption to the community of Standish this afternoon.
“However we have to put the safety of the public ahead of inconvenience and I would like to thank them all for their patience and understanding.
“The investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to call 0161 856 5307.”
