Boy, 4, injured in bizarre accident

Emergency services were called to High Street in Golborne following the distressing and baffling episode at around 3.45pm last Monday.

The North West Ambulance Service found a four-year-old boy had injuries to his face and he was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

Rumours in the area initially suggested that a large concrete post had fallen on the youngster but Wigan Council has since confirmed that this was not the case.

The local authority said the incident actually happened close to a bus stop and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is now trying to discover the cause.

A spokesman for TfGM said: “After being contacted by Wigan Council about this incident, we asked our contractor to visit the bus stop. There is no apparent damage to the stop or shelter and we are investigating reports that a loose railing nearby may have caused the injury.

“We wish the boy involved a speedy recovery and will be happy to speak with his parents.”

It is thought the young boy was making his way home from school and was walking a few paces in front of his mother when he was injured.

Reports suggested the boy was trapped beneath the railing and several people were required to lift it off him, though this could not be confirmed.

The exact location where the boy was hurt could not be determined either but it is believed it was close to the old colliery entrance near a chemist’s store.
