NOT satisfied with stealing its contents, callous Wigan scrap scavengers stole their victim’s entire garage too!

The 85-year-old owner was devastated to receive a phone call informing him his lock-up on Manor Avenue, Golborne, had simply vanished.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward to help track down the brazen thieves.

The elderly victim, who asked not to be identified, said the crime had left him “deeply upset”. He added: “Someone who lives near to Manor Avenue called me to say it had gone. It’s not right, they’ve not only taken everything that was inside, they’ve taken the whole thing.

“There was a number of metal sheets that I was going to use to repair the roof with, a car engine, MG parts and a gearbox.

“I don’t know if anyone will say anything - people might be too scared to come forward. It must have been done over the weekend but I don’t think it was taken over night.”

The lock-up, which police officers described as being “big enough to hold a car” - was housing vehicle parts, machinery and sheets of corrugated metal. The owner, due to his age, was not a frequent visitor to the site but owns other lock-ups in different locations.

A friend said: “It is very unusual that the whole garage has been stolen, not just the contents. There’s about 30 or 40 similar lock-ups down there, some are like sheds made of wood, others are metal.”

A police spokesman said investigations were ongoing but no arrests had been made.

He added: “Officers confirmed that a large structure, plus its contents of machinery and vehicle parts, had been taken.

“We believe the crime could have taken place between midday on Sunday and Tuesday morning. We would ask anyone who might have seen this crime taking place or who has information relating to it to contact Wigan Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
