Broken glass pane closes council pool

Wigan Life Centre swimming pool is closed to the public on Tuesday due to concerns about a shattered pane of glass.

The pane is part of an interior partition between a gym area and the pool at the Life Centre South site.

It cracked overnight and work is now ongoing to replace the offending section and check the remainder of the panels that overlook the pool below.

The broken pane is the latest headache for council bosses regarding safety concerns at the flagship authority hub as last month a glass panel fell from the wall of the Life Centre North building, narrowly avoiding a serious accident.

An investigation has been launched into that incident and temporary scaffolding remains in place to shore up the structure.

Penny McGinty, Wigan Council’s assistant director for leisure, property and resources said: “The pool has been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure whilst we remove a piece of glazing that broke overnight.”
