Car fire shuts M6 carriageway

A family had a lucky escape after their car burst into flames on the M6.

Fire crews were called to the M6 northbound near to junction 26 after a fault caused the fire at around 1.30pm this afternoon.

Another driver had gestured to the driver to pull over after noticing smoke coming from one of the front wheels.

The family could smell smoke and decided to pull onto the hard shoulder and were able to exit the car before it burst into flames.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “The family managed to get out and got over the barrier which was the right thing to do. The fire was contained to the engine and we were on scene for about half an hour.”

The motorway was shut by the Highways Agency for about half an hour while the fire was extinguished.
