THE iconic pit-head wheel at Wigan and Leigh College has been moved to its new home as part of a £12.3m investment project.

Once a piece of working mining machinery from Bickershaw Colliery, it was saved and brought to the college’s Parson’s Walk location where it has become a key Wigan landmark.

The wheel has now been relocated to just outside the college’s Wheel Restaurant on New Market Street.

Work began on demolishing the former front entrance and sports hall in November as part of phase two of the investment, with the final stage being the movement of the wheel to its new home.

Construction is now under way on the £5.5m redevelopment that makes up phase two.

The college has been making significant investments in its facilities, including the new £5.4m Professional Studies Centre and £1.4m state-of-the-art mechanical engineering facilities at its Pagefield Centre on Walkden Avenue.
