DETECTIVES have arrested a man suspected of being at the centre of a tax scam that targeted residents across the borough.
Wigan Council officers warned of the fraud last month after reports that homeowners had been approached by a company claiming they may be in the wrong tax band for their property and could therefore be eligible for a refund.
The firm offered to sort it out for a fee - but there is no need to pay anything to make such checks. Trading standards officers have since arrested a man in Bury.
Coun Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Our officers have stopped many residents from being ripped off by these kinds of companies by advising them to cancel appointments made with the companies and explaining how to check their banding for themselves.”
