A WIGAN dad who was nearly blinded when yobs shot him with an air gun has spoken of his fury at being the latest victim of drive-by attacks.
James Wood was walking his dog, Toby, along Bolton Road, in Ashton, last Friday night when he felt something sharp hit him above his right eye after a group of men drove past in a silver Ford Focus.
In pain, the 45-year-old went home and called an ambulance, only then realising that he had been shot,
It is unclear what had been used, but the father-of-two, of Bolton Road, suspects it was a pellet gun or an air rifle,
He said: “I didn’t know what had happened. I thought that a stone had hit me at first, but a paramedic looked at my wound and told me I had been shot,
“A car had turned into Bolton Road and some lads were hanging out the window, laughing and shouting and then something hit me.
“My right eye had swollen up and I had a big mark where it shot me,
“Luckily it did not hit me straight in the eye, but it was an inch away. I could have been blinded.
“I don’t know if there will be any permanent damage. It makes me wary as I regularly walk my Jack Russell in the area and should not have to worry about being shot.
“I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else. It was so close to my eye, some real damage could have been caused. Next time it could seriously hurt someone.
“I am not sure how many people were in the car, just that it was a silver Ford Focus, with a T registration plate.”
This is not the first roadside shooting incident this month.
On the evening of Wednesday May 1, mum of two Clare Atherton, 32, of Ashton, suffered a fractured thumb when she was shot as she was walking along Wigan Road, Bryn.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that both incidents had happened but could not establish what weapon had been used, or that they were linked.
A spokesman said: “The incident is on our radar for our patrols and we are keeping an open mind.
“We will keep the details on our file so that if any other incidents occur we will consider them.”
Anyone with information about the incident which occurred at 8.30pm on Friday May 17 in Bolton Road, Ashton, or any similar offences, call Wigan Police on 101,
