HUNDREDS of Wigan motorists have been left delayed after thousands of chickens escaped following a motorway crash.
A lorry carrying around 6,000 birds hit a safety barrier between junctions 11 and 12 on the M62 in the early hours of the morning causing crates of the live poultry to spill out onto the carriageway.
As a result the motorway was closed during the peak morning travelling period.
This caused hours of delays for drivers throughout the borough including in Ashton and Leigh.
A frustrated motorist from Whitley who was stuck on the M6 admitted she was furious as she was late for an important meeting at work.
She said: “This is ridiculous, it took me an hour and a half to move 10 miles.
“The whole motorway was gridlocked all because of a load of chickens. It made me late for all of my morning meetings, I’m so annoyed.”
Emergency services worked throughout the morning to clear debris and the chickens from the road which were eventually shepherded back into the truck.
Michael Clarke, from the Highways Agency, said the recovey operation had proved “quite complicated”.
