AN investigation has been launched after a small fire was lit outside a cell at a young offenders’ institution in the borough.
Firefighters were called to Hindley YOI following reports of an incident at around 7.45pm on Friday March 7.
Staff at the Gibson Street prison quickly put out the flames and were able to bring the situation under control before a fire crew from Hindley station arrived.
No staff or prisoners were injured in the incident, and a spokesman for the prison service said an internal investigation into the fire will now take place.
The fire is not the first time the actions of inmates at Hindley YOI have come under critical scrutiny.
The report of a visit from the Chief Inspector of Prisons published last April raised concerns about the number of fights and violent incidents taking place at the YOI and said there was a high use of force.
However, the report also praised the relationship between staff and inmates.
