AN investigation has been launched after a young horse died after it was left abandoned in a Wigan field.
Firefighters rescued the three-year-old foal after it became trapped in mud in a stream when abandoned in a grassy area near Beech Tree houses in Bamfurlong at 8pm on Friday.
However, the animal suffering serious injuries during its two-hour ordeal and subsequently had to be put down.
A spokesman for the RSPCA said they were investigating the incident.
A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “The crews attended the scene and worked for nearly two hours.
“Sadly the vet at the scene assessed its condition and the foal had to be put down.”
Crews used specialist equipment and took nearly two hours to free the distressed animal.
