WIGAN shoppers are getting a festive bonus - free parking for longer.
The council announced today that it is extending its festive season arrangements to encourage more visitors into Wigan and Leigh town centres into the second weekend of the new year.
So now there will be free parking on its surface and multi-storey carparks after 3pm until Saturday January 11 excluding Wigan’s civic centre car park.
And there will also be free Sunday parking until January 12, again excluding the civic centre car park.
The deal does not include the Grand Arcade which is not under council ownership.
Coun David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council and cabinet member for the economy, said: “We want to ensure Wigan and Leigh town centres are attractive destinations for shoppers over the Christmas period and we know parking plays an important part in this. We will be offering free parking between Mondays and Saturdays after 3pm and all day on Sundays right through the festive season.
“Both towns have good markets and a wide-range of shops and these parking changes mean hard-pressed families will be able to make the most of what’s offer without having to worry about the cost of parking.”
