HOSPITAL patients across the borough are enjoying the fifth best service in the whole of the north of England, it’s been found.
The prestigious confirmation comes in an internal NHS Quality monitoring report seen by the Wigan Evening Post.
It carries weight because assessors looked at every facet of Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s operations from accident and emergency four-hour performance to post op mortality and MRSI infection rates over the past twelve months.
The nearest neighbouring NHS Trust to Wigan - Bolton - has fallen to 48th out of 50, while St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust came in at 36th place.
The north’s best performing health services were those administered by Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust.
But Wigan is the best performing Trust in Greater Manchester.
Today leading WWL Trust Board member and former MP Neil Turner, hailed findings of the report.
He also called on management and staff to help ensure WWL maintains it’s placing.
Mr Turner said: “This is a tremendous result.
“It shows that everyone in the Trust, the Board, consultants and doctors, nurses and the auxiliary staff value our patients and make sure they get the very best treatment, not just medically, but in every aspect of their care. Wigan has improved its standing, because we are concerned and work hard to get the improvements.
“It is disappointing to see that while Wigan is riding high and improving, our neighbours in Bolton have fallen to 48th out of the 50 northern Trusts with St Helens and Knowsley falling to 36th place.”
Wrightington Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust Chairman Andrew Foster said he was pleased that the report places WWL as the top performing Trust in Greater Manchester and the fifth best in NHS’s North Region which covers North West, North East, Humber and Yorkshire.
He said: “This new quality report by NHS North includes a number of quality measures including mortality indicators, financial and governance ratings along with health care associated infections such as C Difficile and MRSA and various other performance measures.”
The assessment included data collected by independent health consultants Dr Foster between July 2011 and October 2012.
It covers the whole range of patient care indices including Hospital Level Mortality Indicator, Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR), HSMR by Weekend Admission, Monitor Risk ratings, Health Care Associated Infections, Care Quality Commission warnings, patient safety compliance, inpatient survey results, staff survey results, mixed sex accommodation, referal to treatment 53 week waiters, accident and emergency four-hour performance, percentage of emergency re-admissions and the average length of stay.
