TRAGEDY was avoided after police talked down a man threatening to jump on to the M6 near Ashton.
Officers rushed to the scene at junction 25 of the motorway near Bryn after receiving reports of an incident on the bridge at Drummer’s Lane at around noon today (Saturday).
The man did not carry out his threat and he was taken to hospital.
Police closed the exit slip road northbound and the entry slip road southbound at the junction, while Drummer’s Lane was also shut between Brocstedes Road and Sougher’s Lane.
The closures were in place for more than an hour, leading to lengthy queues as motorists tried to leave the motorway at the Orrell junction.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the roads were due to re-open at around 1.30pm.
