Legendary newsman John Benn dies at 78
The 78-year-old died on Sunday at Wigan Infirmary after a short illness.
During his time as the Wigan Observer’s chief sports writer, John covered Wigan Athletic, Wigan RL and Orrell RU.

Hide AdIn 1969 he joined the Wigan Post & Chronicle and held various posts including news editor, local government editor and sports editor.
He was passionate about all sports including cricket and held many honorary roles at both Wigan and Highfield cricket clubs.
He was also a member of Wigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society and sang in the choirs at Wigan Parish and Highfield St Matthew’s churches.
He is survived by his wife Anne, children Janet and Andy and five grandchildren. His funeral will take place at St Matthew’s at a date yet to be arranged.
