It is not known at this stage if the accident has been caused by the hot weather conditions.

Penny McGinty, Wigan Council’s assistant director for leisure, property and resources, said: “No-one was injured and we quickly evacuated members of public and staff from the building.

“We are now carrying out a thorough assessment of the situation.

“We will take expert advice to ensure the building is safe before members of the public can return.

“The centre will be shut for the rest of the day and we will inform the public when it re-opens.

“In the meantime members of the public are encouraged to access our customer and library services online or they can contact 01942 404364

“We are also looking to put extra customer service arrangements in place at another of our buildings while the Life Centre is closed.”
