More than 80 people took part in the annual Joining Jack Yorkshire Three Peaks (JJY3P), scaling Pen y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

The aim is to complete all three within 12 hours but the real goal was to raise funds for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). For the first time the walkers were greeted with glorious sunshine as they climed more than 5,200ft to complete their challenge.

Organised by Rob Medway, the hike raises money for Wigan-based charity Joining Jack whose inspiration, eight-year-old Jack Johnson, greeted everyone at the finish lines.

There were smiles aplenty as Jack, brother James and parents Andy and Alex, who set up Joining Jack thanked everyone for their efforts.

With money still coming in, a staggering £27,000 has already been raised for research into the muscle-wasting illness DMD.

Alex said: “I can’t thank people enough for doing this and for making it such a special event. Every year people come out and take on this walk which is so hard, it really is amazing.

“There’s such a wide range of abilities of people taking part from those who run the whole way to those who don’t do much long walking.

“We want to say a special thanks to Rob and his team though, the effort they put in is unbelievable. I can’t put into words how much it means what they do for our charity.”

Rob, who has worked tirelessly to organise the event, said: “Once again I am blown away by the support the event receives from old hands and new people looking to take on this great challenge.”
