New defibs are installed

Appley Bridge and Shevington Moor have been added to the growing list of locations that now have potentially life-saving equipment available 24/7.

Publicly accessible defibrillators (PAD’s) are now located at two venues in the heart of the communities outside the Silver Tally in Shevington Moor and The Appley Bridge Pharmacy on Woodnook Road.

Along defibs already located in Shevington and Crooke village this means that the ward of Shevington with Lower Ground is leading the way on making life saving equipment accessible in case of an emergency.

Coun Damian Edwardson said: “Along with my colleagues councillors Paul Collins and Mike Crosby, I have been working for a number of years to ensure that Shevington with Lower Ground is among the most well-equipped areas in the borough when it comes to defibrillators.

“These cabinets are an essential part of the plan as they mean a defibrillator can be accessed at any time of day or night, and this is important as you never know when a cardiac emergency may strike. I’m very proud that we are leading the way on this, and I’m even more pleased to see other Councillors and wards also placing defibs in their respective areas.

“Wigan borough has a serious issue regarding heart health and although we have seen huge improvements, we still have a long way to go. This is why defibrillators and the free life-saving CPR training we offer is so important.

“We would like to thank all the owners of the locations where we have placed these defibrillators as they are playing a significant part in making our communities safer. Without their willingness to take part in the scheme, our ambition to make Shevington with Lower Ground ‘Heart Safe’ couldn’t be realised. We haven’t finished yet with defibs or free training, and hope to agree two more locations soon including one in Standish Lower Ground.

“If anyone is interested in hosting a defib or being trained on CPR they can contact us via the usual channels and we will be more than happy to help.”
